NOTES

  • The data comprises every NBA player who played in the 21st century. The chart works best when you narrow your focus on players who had overlap in the years they played. Additionally, if you select a player for your chart that did not play during your time range, nothing will appear on the chart.
  • Don't know where to start? Try selecting LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Dwight Howard -- they all began between 2003-2007, and are either still playing or recently stopped.

Welcome to the definitive look at the 21st century of the NBA! Create customizable charts to watch the progression of your favorite players in key statistical categories since the year 2000.


First off, a bar chart race -- what is it? A bar chart race is a dynamic take on your traditional bar chart that demonstrates data changing over time by animating the chart incrementally. As the chart updates -- with each passing year, in our case -- the x-axis changes to accomodate the increased cumulative totals. Simultaneously, the bars re-sort themselves at each increment, so that the highest total is always reflected at the top.


This project leverages data from https://www.basketball-reference.com/ and specifically looks at the 21st century history of the NBA, allowing you to see how the league's players have fared in key statistical categories over the past 20+ years.
